An Hour Come
The mother holds the lifeless child
Her eyes are empty red and wild.
She sees her husband blown apart
In a tableau of the devil's art
And love once thought invincible
Reduced and severed by a will
To conquer and the Light betray
And lead the saintly soul astray.
The world with evil seethes and spews
It venom and would fain confuse,
There is in man a pressing need
And in the soil the truth-light's seed
That shall in an unsuspecting hour
Rise up and suddenly overpower
The demons that seemed the lords of life,
Encouragers of death and strife
Who spill with glee upon earth's sod
Their venom on the lambs of God,
An hour come of a golden dream
And peace love's sacrifice redeem.
